Cassava is a root plant that could save Africa during climate change. It was introduced to South Africa by Portuguese traders in the 17th century. While other staple foods die with heat and drought, Cassava continues to thrive; it needs little water and poor soil. But there is one problem; the plant is susceptible to disease and infection. There has already been wipe outs leading to famines around the world. So currently reports are out saying that more research and experimentation need to be done to make the plant more durable. This could be the food that saves Africa when climate change hits. What do you think? Is Cassava the answer? Or is this just the easy way out? And who will this really benefit? ~Victoria Taylor~ http://planetsave.com/2012/02/11/dutch-kids-ride-bicycle-bus-to-school/
Way to go Netherlands! This is the kind of innovation everyone needs right now: one that not only appeals to the environment, but one that benefits us physically, socially, and mentally. A few schools in the Netherlands are lucky enough to be able to pedal their bus to school. That’s right, the bus is literally a bicycle! This creatively designed mode of transportation made by the De Café Racer company seats ten children and one adult driver who is able to steer the bus and activate a small motor for assistance on hills. This “bike-bus” promotes healthy living, clean air and water, and a generally clean environment. Watch the streets America, we may eventually be able to try this amazing bus out! ~Jonathan Constabel~ http://www.treehugger.com/climate-change/1000-year-old-arabic-texts-help-climate-scientists.html
When it comes to new discoveries, who knew that the most helpful would simply be the uncovering of forgotten information? This article discusses the recent exposition of ancient Arabic texts written in the late ninth and early tenth centuries. They were produced by scholars who included the occurrence of important weather related events which will enable us to relate them to the present and possibly attain a better understanding of global climate change and how it is and is going to affect our planet. This breakthrough is just one of many findings aiding in our quest to heal the Earth and there are many more out there to be found, so keep exploring and enjoying nature. Who knows what you might find? ~Jonathan Constabel http://www.triplepundit.com/2012/02/will-apples-spaceship-be-greenest-building/
Architects Foster + Partners are set to design Apple’s new ‘Spaceship’ building in Cupertino, California, to be completed in 2015. It is projected to be a highly futuristic building only conceivable from the imagination. Apple has been criticized before because of a lack of environmentally friendly credentials. This time however, Apple is set to have a completely self-sufficient structure able to hold about 13,000 employees, and relies on the electrical grid only as a backup. It is to be built with eco-friendly materials, and a solar paneled roof. The 150-acre site is intended to be 80% green landscape with over 2,300 trees. Not only is it green, but this building is promised to be one of the most technologically advanced offices in the world, so one can only guess what Apple is going to create next – this time with energy from the sun. ~Zach Richard~ http://www.enn.com/wildlife/article/43988
This article talks about wolves in Wyoming. The gray wolf has been taken off the endangered species list in Idaho and Montana but because Wyoming does not like the increased population because they kill the game and livestock. The Wyoming government has had to make a deal with the federal government about how the wolves will be dealt with when the state is in charge. As of right now the wolves are not allowed to be hunted; however if the population gets out of hand the people will be allowed to hunt them to control it. This is a debated topic. Environmentalists feel that is wolves should be protected and do need areas to retreat to like national parks, but others feel they should be hunted to protect the livestock and game. ~Catelyn McMenamin and Jennifer Monico~ |
